Spring Break 2018 - Jeanette Hayes
Castor Gallery is pleased to announce J fast, J furious, a selection of new oil paintings by New York artist, Jeanette Hayes. Located in Room #2201, SPRING/BREAK Art Show, 4 Times Square (Entrance on 43rd Street), the installation will be on view from March 6th (Preview Day) through March 12th, 11am- 6pm.
J fast, J furious, finds Hayes’ singular perspective on pop culture and anime figures celebrating female bikers in a series of new oil paintings. Hayes depicts anime figures posing on motorcycles striking a defiant attitude towards a traditionally masculine activity.
While women in motorcycle subculture report their role as generally characterized by patriarchal submission, these new paintings highlight female autonomy and personal agency. Hayes depicts cohorts of women performing male duties, liberated from the role of a wife or mother, conquering a large machine and the territory of the road. Hayes’ fresh palette and compositions provide a sense of adventure, freedom and accomplishment.
In her last solo exhibition, Despicable Me 5, Jeanette Hayes reappropriated the imagery of film studio logos to explore the individual and collective relationship we have with fast paced media and entertainment. Continuing this formal conversation, Do you dare me?”- j fast, j furious engages with the theme of speed as a means to allude to the acceleration and attendant transformation of shifting relationships and identities being dictated by technology and entertainment.
Jeanette Hayes: (b. 1988) Known for her collage-like aesthetic, Hayes uses mixed media to build a bridge between high and popular culture. Her paintings are invaded by internet icons and anime characters. Prior solo shows include Castor Gallery and Romeo NYC. Group shows include The Hole & M+B Gallery LA. Video work includes projects Chanel, Alexander Wang, & Proenza Schuler. Hayes is based in New York and received her BFA from PRATT.
Jeanette Hayes: Do you dare me?”- j fast, j furious, is on view at 4 Times Sq from Wednesday March 7th to Monday March 12th from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. For additional information, please contact Justin De Demko at firstname.lastname@example.org
